Castagnole! Italienska småkakor

It's time for Carnival in Italy, and amazing sweet food is the king in this period.

I have many good memories about Carnival: masks, colours, happiness, and of course food! Chiacchiere, castagnole, frittelle, fried and sugary pastries that taste so good and so appetizing.

I made today some castagnole for my daughter and her friends, it's a super easy recipe that will garantee success!

Here the recipe:

  •  200 gr flour
  •  2 eggs
  •  50 gr butter
  •  50 gr sugar
  •  baking powder
  •  lemon zest
  •  vanillin
  •  salt to taste
Put flour, sugar, vanillin, salt, lemon zest and baking powder in a bowl. Make a hole in the center and put the eggs and butter. Mix gently all together, starting from the center and incorporate the dry ingredients a little at a time. You will get a dough with a wonderful texture; divide the dough and roll it into a long, snake shape, then cut it into pieces ca 2 cm long. Roll each piece making balls.
At this point you can choose between frying or baking them.
I baked castagnole (180°C for 10 min) because I wanted a lighter effect, although the original recipe is just frying.
Sprinkle with some powdered sugar... and that's it!
Easy, fast, tasty!

You can add more flavours to the dough; for instance, you can add orange zest, anise liqueur, limoncello or grappa.
